Old Wives Tales: Separating Myth about Signs of Pregnancy and Conceiving
from Reality
1. A NORMAL MENSTRUAL CYCLE IS 28 DAYS
Not even close! A woman’s cycle can vary from 21 to 35 days and there can be
great variances in an individual woman from month to month. Remember, every
woman’s cycle is unique and taking the time understand your own body and its
rhythms will be greatly beneficial as you try to conceive a child. Testing basal
temperature changes and LH levels are just two simple and affordable ways to
help you demystify your own cycle.
2. I’M LATE-- I MUST BE PREGNANT
While being "late" can be an early indicator of pregnancy, it is by no means
a guarantee. It is actually almost cruel for a woman struggling with infertility
to think that because her period didn’t start on its "usual" day that she must
be pregnant on when in reality, her cycle might just have been off a day or
two. The use of testing methods in the privacy of a woman’s home helps eliminate
these false hopes and assists successful family planning.
3. STRESS IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN INFERTILITY AND MAKES YOUR PERIOD LATE
Yes and no. Many women believe that it is stress that makes their periods late,
but stress actually affects the timing of ovulation and ovulation determines
when your period starts. Stress can wreak havoc on a woman’s hormones causing
a change in the timing of her ovulation. Once a woman has already ovulated–providing
fertilization and implantation haven’t occurred-- her body already knows when
her next period will start–generally 14 days after ovulation
4. PREGNANCY IS TOUGHER TO ACHIEVE AFTER AGE 30 BECAUSE THE EGGS ARE
GONE
Not even close. While it is common for some women to delay pregnancy until her
30's and beyond, if infertility occurs, it is not usually due to a scarcity
in eggs. Most women are born with more than 400,000 eggs and have plenty remaining
even as they head into menopause.
5. FERTILITY IS USUALLY THE WOMEN’S PROBLEM
Not always. According to a report by the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston,
Texas, the number of couples affected by infertility is currently estimated
to be 15% of all couples who attempting to produce a child. This report states
that the difficulties are attributable to the male alone in 30% of these couples.
While there are other studies with similar data and some variances–it is crucial
to remember that infertility is not a blaming game and it is best to work on
a solution rather than focus on blame–that helps no one.
6. MY SISTER (FRIEND ETC.) GOT PREGNANT WITHOUT TRYING......
Well, if that were always the case and we all had 28 day cycles and ovulated
on the 14th day–NO one would have to "try" to get pregnant. Don’t rush to compare
your situation with anyone else. It is so important to understand the uniqueness
of your own cycle as you strive to achieve a pregnancy–you might just be a day
or so off–before you start comparing your situation to another woman’s. It may
never be that easy. But you can choose to gain knowledge of your fertility and
your unique cycle by using some simple, inexpensive testing devices in your
own home. This could make all of the difference in your world.
7. WE’VE BEEN TRYING FOR 3 MONTHS AND NOTHING YET...
Relax. Most ob-gyn’s don’t really delve into the reasons behind infertility
until a couple have been really trying for about six months to a year. There
are, however, many couples who get anxious and choose to spend thousands of
dollars on infertility specialists before exhausting reliable and affordable
alternatives in their own home. Yes, some couples do have larger troubles than
others when it comes to infertility and need professional intervention–but for
many, their timing is SIMPLY off.
For these couples understanding how to recognize this is usually quite direct
and doesn’t require a specialist, though many specialists DO recommend many
of the same in-home tests/devices that are readily available without doctor’s
fees or a prescription. AND, if after consistently using at-home testing devices
over a period of several months without achieving a pregnancy you will have
gained valuable information to share with a specialist.
8. I CAN ONLY GET PREGNANT ON THE DAY THAT I OVULATE
False. False. False. Ironically, it is the belief in this myth that leads to
many unplanned pregnancies and can be downright confusing for both men and women.
An unfertilized egg is considered viable for up to 24 hours and sperm can live
for up to five days if optimum conditions exist. If a woman ovulates on day
15, sperm from intercourse occurring on day 11 could certainly be viable and
fertilization could occur. A woman’s fertility window is roughly six to seven
days if all conditions are favorable. Once again, it is critical to know when
you ovulate.
9. A WOMAN MUST ACHIEVE ORGASM IN ORDER TO CONCEIVE A CHILD
No. Unfortunately orgasm has no direct impact on a woman’s fertility. As the
male reaches climax and ejaculates, the sperm is deposited in position to seek
out and fertilize and egg.
But there is no direct correlation between a woman’s orgasm and conception.
10. I’LL GET PREGNANT IF WE DECIDE TO ADOPT
Don’t count on it. Everyone has heard about "someone" who struggled with infertility
and after making the decision to adopt or finalizing an adoption suddenly gets
pregnant. While this CAN happen, it is rare and can complicate many matters.
If you truly can’t have a biological child, you have to be certain that you
can accept and love an adopted child as your own. You need to undergo psychological
evaluations, a home study and exhaustive paperwork and be certain that your
heart is in the right place. There could also be cultural, religious or racial
issues to consider. For many, many couples this is a wonderful alternative–in
fact many couples who are able to have biological children choose to add to
their family by adopting because there are so many orphans in need. But for
those who think that this is some magical solution, that is sadly not the case.
While adoption is always an option–it is one that you have to embrace wholeheartedly
and never a cure for physiological infertility problems.
